How do we feel so confident? I hear you ask well ... our extensive plant quarantine protocol for new stock being added to our collection. It starts with a visual inspection of the plant looking not just for the pests themselves but also signs of their presence (like for example did you know that thrips will leave little black tar like spots and this is their poo)  

When needed, we gently get all the old (potentially pesty) soil off from the roots and re-pot our plants into premium chunky soil ninja soil or a semi-hydro set up. We keep things all natural. No harmful chemicals like glyphosate or provanto here! We use good old-fashioned methods like giving our plants a warm rinse in the shower and a little spritz of isopropyl alcohol.  

Then its 3 weeks of daily monitoring for new arrivals before we even think about listing plants for sale, we will often wait for active growth, only selling plants when they are stable, happy and ready to be moved to their new homes.  

Now, we do want to clarify that not all tiny critters are villains. For instance, springtails and some soil mites are actually the good guys, helping keep your soil happy and healthy. So, if you spot one, give it a wave! 

Now about those fungus gnats, while they might sound like a big deal, adults are really just a bit of a nuisance. The real trouble comes from their larvae, which can damage the roots of stressed or young plants, but don’t worry, at Savage Tropics, we only sell healthy, robust plants, and we make sure that our young plants are free from any pesky larvae. You can rest easy knowing that your plants are in great shape!
